Themes > Search engine optimization
It is important that you choose your domain name carefully. User will click faster on a relevant domain name. For example when you are searching for a flower shop chances are you will click on 'flowershop_jane.com' and not on ' janes_homepage.com' . So think what you want to achieve with your website, what public you want to attract and then select your domain name accordingly.
It seems also that a domain name must ripen, like good wine. A site which is active for a number of years, with relevant content and which is updated on a regular basis will receive a higher ranking than a website which is only up and running for a few months or which hasn't been updated for several months. That's why, for example Apple has domain names like ' www.apple.com/ipod' and not ipod.apple.com or www.ipod.com.
Having said this, it seems that a new site which is optimized for search engines will be rewarded with a better rating than a older site which hasn't been optimized in the correct manner.
And when you select a domain name try to make sure it isn't blacklisted, for example because a previous owner used the domain for pornographic material. Ask your provider!
