This is a list of things you have to do and don't to to boost your site in the page rankings...
You should do the following:
- Create a Google Account and register for the Google Webmaster Tools. .
- Take some time to read the Google guidelines for webmasters! You can find them on Google's site.
- Make sure your content is relevant and to the point.
- Optimize your site! Give all your pages a good title and description and a number of relevant keywords. See the page meta tags and content and the page SEO in WX5 for more information.
- Give all your images an Alt-tag!
- Publish your optimized site to your webserver.
- Check (some of) your pages using an on line website analyser. This can give invaluable information on the ´searchability of your pages´ and tips for further optimization.
- Register you site with Google using the Google Webmaster Tools. These are very useful for every webmaster.
- Create a robots.txt and a sitemap.xml. Google has a robots.txt generator utility. It's under the 'Tools menu'. See the page on robots.txt and sitemap.xml for more information
- Remove any unwanted clutter from your webspace or hide it using the robots.txt file.
- At Google, register your sitemap.xml using the Sitemaps option in the Google Webmaster Tools
- Register your site at as many general search engines as you can find (Yahoo, Altavista, Live Search, etcetera) and with online directories which are relevant to your website.
- Get as many links as you can to your site from relevant other sites, such as online directories.
- Wait until Google has indexed your site.
Things you shouldn't do
- Don't get linked with a site which might be considered suspicious. You might get a penalty by association.
- Cram your title with keywords. This isn´t the place for them.
- Use to many keywords or use keywords which aren't relevant to the content of the page
- Add hidden text blocks with keywords on you pages.
